Signs Your Car Suspension Needs Repair

Burnaby’s roads — from the potholes on Kingsway to the speed bumps in residential neighbourhoods — put real stress on your vehicle’s suspension system. Most drivers don’t think about their suspension until it’s causing obvious problems. But catching suspension issues early can save you hundreds of dollars and keep you safer on BC roads.

At Bill & Walter’s Garage, we’ve been diagnosing and repairing suspension systems for Burnaby drivers since 1956. Here’s what to watch for.

What Does Your Suspension System Actually Do?

Your suspension system does three critical jobs:

  1. Keeps your tires in contact with the road for maximum traction and braking
  2. Absorbs road impacts so you feel a smooth, comfortable ride
  3. Maintains steering control so your vehicle handles safely

When suspension components wear out, all three of these functions are compromised — affecting your safety, your tire life, and your fuel economy.

8 Warning Signs Your Suspension Needs Attention

1. Your Car Bounces Excessively Over Bumps
After hitting a bump, your car should settle within one or two bounces. If it keeps bouncing like a trampoline, your shock absorbers or struts are worn and no longer controlling wheel movement effectively.

Quick test: Push down hard on each corner of your car and let go. If it bounces more than twice, your shocks are likely worn.

2. Clunking or Knocking Sounds Over Potholes
Clunking sounds — especially over rough pavement or speed bumps — often indicate worn ball joints, control arm bushings, or sway bar links. In severe cases, worn ball joints can cause a wheel to separate from the vehicle entirely. Don’t ignore this sound.

3. Your Vehicle Pulls to One Side
If your car drifts left or right without steering input, you may have a suspension alignment problem or a worn component pulling the wheel out of position. This puts uneven stress on tires and makes the vehicle unsafe in emergency maneuvers.

4. Uneven or Rapid Tire Wear
Your suspension keeps tires in proper contact with the road. When components wear out, tires can develop cupping (scalloped wear), inside or outside edge wear, or feathering — all signs of a suspension or alignment problem that needs correction.

5. Vehicle Nose-Dives When Braking
If the front of your vehicle dips dramatically when you apply the brakes, your front struts are worn. This also lengthens your stopping distance — a safety concern, especially in Burnaby’s wet weather.

6. Excessive Body Roll When Cornering
Feeling like your car leans significantly when turning? Worn sway bar links and bushings allow excessive body roll, reducing cornering stability and putting more stress on your tires and other suspension components.

7. Steering Feels Loose or Imprecise
Vague, loose steering — where small inputs don’t result in precise vehicle movement — can indicate worn tie rod ends, ball joints, or steering rack issues. This is particularly dangerous at highway speeds on the Trans-Canada or Highway 1.

8. Vibration in the Steering Wheel
Vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds often points to worn suspension components, wheel balance issues, or tie rod problems. Don’t confuse this with brake pedal vibration, which is usually a rotor issue.

How Long Does Car Suspension Last?

Suspension component life varies significantly:

ComponentTypical Lifespan
Shock absorbers80,000–100,000 km
Struts80,000–100,000 km
Ball joints100,000–150,000 km
Control arm bushings100,000–150,000 km
Tie rod ends100,000–150,000 km
Sway bar links80,000–120,000 km
Coil springs150,000+ km

These are averages — BC road conditions, potholes, and driving habits can significantly reduce component life.

What Happens If You Ignore Suspension Problems?

Ignoring suspension issues doesn’t just affect ride comfort — it creates a cascade of problems:

  • Worn shocks → excessive tire bounce → rapid uneven tire wear → premature tire replacement ($800–$1,200)
  • Misaligned wheels → tires wearing on edges → early replacement needed
  • Worn ball joint left too long → complete wheel separation → accident and major repair costs
  • Poor suspension → longer braking distances → increased accident risk on wet Burnaby roads

Catching suspension issues early is almost always significantly cheaper than dealing with the downstream consequences.

The Bounce Test — A Simple Check You Can Do at Home

Not sure if your shocks are worn? Try this simple test in your driveway:

  1. Park on a flat surface
  2. Push down firmly on one corner of the vehicle with both hands
  3. Release and watch what happens
  4. If the vehicle bounces more than 1–2 times before settling, your shocks or struts on that corner are likely worn
  5. Repeat on all four corners

This isn’t a definitive diagnosis — but it’s a useful indicator that it’s time to book a professional inspection.
